70th-anniversary message from our CEO

Dear Members,

On January 28, 1952, we opened our doors in Building 801 as the Hughes Aircraft Employees Federal Credit Union, ready to put into practice the philosophy of people helping people. Hughes Federal Credit Union continues to grow and much has changed over the past seventy years, but what is most important is what has not changed. We remain today what we were then–a member-owned and operated financial cooperative in existence solely for the benefit of our members.

The eleven attendees at the first Hughes Federal Credit Union annual meeting held on January 14, 1952, recognized a member-owned and operated financial institution could better serve the specific financial needs of Hughes Aircraft Company employees than a for-profit bank would. And in 2001, our designation as a low-income, underserved community charter gave us the opportunity to carry this purpose further by allowing us to make a positive difference in the financial lives of many more Tucsonans.

"Staying true to the mission our credit union was founded on, we remain committed to the financial wellness of our members by providing high quality financial products to our field of membership while maintaining our long-term financial stability."

What started as a two-person office in 1952, progressed to an award-winning credit union with over 200 employees, spanning across Southern Arizona with seven locations and 1.9 billion in assets. Staying true to the mission our credit union was founded on, we remain committed to the financial wellness of our members by providing high quality financial products to our field of membership while maintaining our long-term financial stability.

As a people helping people locally owned financial cooperative, our commitment goes beyond that of our members. We support our community through various programs and outreach events. From raising thousands for Friends of the Oro Valley Library and the Tucson Wildlife Center to awarding $100,000 in scholarships and sponsoring a financial literacy program, Hughes will continue to champion for organizations and causes that work to make our community stronger.

With more than 166,000 members today, our success is tied to our membership, and without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. To show our gratitude for helping us reach this milestone, we are commemorating our 70th anniversary with 70 random acts of kindness throughout the year to give back to the communities and members we serve.

On behalf of  our volunteer board of directors, supervisory committee members,  management, and staff, we thank you, our members for your continued patronage and trust. We look forward to serving you for many more years to come. Wishing you a  happy, healthy, and prosperous 2022.

With gratitude,

Robert J. Swick

President and CEO
