Protect Yourself from Fraud

Scams come in many forms, but the goal is always the same: to steal your money or personal information. We're here to help you stay informed and protected.

Common Scams to Watch For

Overpayment Scams

Someone sends you a check for more than expected and asks you to return the difference. The check is fake—and you're responsible for the loss.

Phishing

Emails, texts, or calls asking you to "verify" your account information.

Reminder: We will never contact you to ask for your personal or login information.

Phone Spoofing

Scammers can make it look like they're calling from our phone number or another trusted source. They may create a sense of urgency to get your account details.

If something feels off, hang up and call us directly. For more information, click here.

Unauthorized Withdrawals

Scammers may pose as charities or prize offers to collect your banking details and set up recurring withdrawals.

Unsolicited Check Fraud

A small check arrives unexpectedly. Cashing it may enroll you in costly products or services.

Hughes Federal Credit Union understands it’s crucial to help protect you from account takeover fraud. That’s why we are introducing a new ID proofing measure for in-person visits to our location and our Shared Branch locations. This new fraud prevention measure allows us to make certain it is YOU trying to access your account, not an impostor.

If you bank at one of our Shared Branch locations, a teller can now identify and authenticate members with out-of-state IDs in the branch through a QR code and one-time passcode multi-factor authentication verification. This additional layer of authentication will be used for all transactions for members using out-of-state IDs.

Members will only have to go through this authentication process once. To do this before heading into a Shared Branch location, please complete these steps:

  1. Scan the QR code located in the branch or visit verify.coop.org.
  2. Select your credit union's name from a drop-down list.
  3. Enter your member number and the last four digits of your social security number.
  4. Upload a photo of your ID.
  5. Take a selfie.
  6. Show your one-time passcode to the teller (passcode is valid for 20 minutes).

Tip: Save your validation for an even quicker experience next time!
